Kenya: Effective Bottom-Up Development

Village Volunteers works in partnership with rural village and capacity-building programs, and Kenya shows why that partnership model matters. Development that lasts is built from the village up, not delivered from the outside in.

Mama Maria Kenya Clinic is a clear example. It is an indigenous, community-centric organization, run by locally trained professionals with a keen understanding of the healthcare challenges each community faces. Widows and others in need, with little or no opportunity for income, are trained in the daily operation and management of the clinic, so the skills and the livelihoods stay in the community.

Our seven partner programs in Kenya each follow the same principle: local leadership first, with volunteers and project support helping communities carry out their own plans for survival, education, and growth.
